For the residents of McLennan and Hill counties, Feb 15th,
2009
will be a day remembered for a very long time! At 11:00 am, a series of
three sonic booms were heard by most of the inhabitants of West, Texas.
Many rushed outside to see what was going on- many believed
that
an airplane must be crashing since there is more than one local airport
nearby. All who looked up that morning saw basically the same thing: a swirling
cloud crossing the morning sky. The mass was moving quite quickly and
was gone within miinutes.
One local resident said he looked at his watch to see what time it was
because he figured that the authorities would want to know what time
the plane crashed!
Approximately 10-15 minutes after the swirling cloud disappeared, it
started raining rocks. Most of the residents had gone back inside to
ponder what the strange thing in the sky was. When the news came out
that it was indeed a meteorite and not space debris from the collision
of two space satellites the previous Saturday, many residents went back
outside to look around. Several were surprised to find small black
rocks lying where they had been standing while they watched the
meteorite cross the sky! Searching still goes on for more of this amazing meteorite; both by
meteorite hunters and the local residents. |
